Know the cloth

The Asooke Library

Three royal weaves, each with its own character, origin, and story. Understanding the cloth is the first step to wearing it well.

01 · The Indigo Cloth

Ètù

Ètù, meaning "guinea fowl" in Yorùbá, is a dark blue indigo fabric; usually with thin white or light blue stripes resembling the feathers of a guinea fowl.

02 · The Wild Silk

Sányán

Sányán, often called the king of fabrics, is woven from the fibres of the local wild silk (Anaphe). It is characterised by its light brown, earthy tones and soft texture.

03 · The Crimson Weave

Àlàárì

Àlàárì is a vibrant and luxurious fabric characterised by its striking red or wine-coloured threads. It is often woven with silk or cotton, and its bold colour symbolises wealth, celebration, and prestige.
